Eric Robinson notices that many of us have suffered heartbreak in our journey with God and the church, and asks how might this be an invitation to open us to living in a new reality?

Reflection Questions:

1. When are the times your heart has been broken in your faith journey?
2. Where do you see your life resonating with the story of Joseph?
3. How might God be inviting you to allow your heart to be broken open?

Opening Prayer

It has felt hot and dry for a long time.
We long for the seasons to turn,
Thirsty for autumnal rain,
Waiting for a breeze that cools.
We are suspended, God, in this moment with you.

We ask you for what we need,
Worried about what might be if it does not come.
We pray for those in places burned out
And swept away in the floods.
We do not take provision for granted.

Be with us, God, in the desert.
Prepare our hearts which we have hidden,
Protected under prickly spines
And camouflaged in sand colors.
Held with care away from the harsh sun.

Rain down your spirit on us,
That our hearts may burst open with the colors
Of resilient desert blooms.

In the name of God, the Creator of all that blooms,
Jesus, who was tested in the desert,
And the Spirit who rains within us

Amen

Benediction

May our hearts break
For those who fear.
And grieve
For those who suffer.

May our hearts hold fast
For those entrusted into our care.
And open
For those who have been harmed.

May our hearts ache
and those in need
And melt
For those seeking warmth.

May our hearts leap
For those who bring us joy
And soften
For those we hold close.

In the name of God who draws close to us,
Jesus, sent to heal the brokenhearted,
And the Spirit who binds up our wounds

Amen
