For over 20 years, Austin has been the Sister City of Guajoyo, a rural village of farmers and former guerrilla combatants in El Salvador, supporting this community as it emerged from the devastating Salvadoran civil war, and then in development projects such as potable water, construction of a school, and capacity building of community leaders. This sistering relationship is part of an international network called US El Salvador Sister Cities and CRIPDES, a grassroots organization working in El Salvador in rural development.
On Wednesday, October 2nd, representatives of Sister Cities and of CRIPDES, as well as the Austin sistering committee will be speaking at Vox Veniae about their experiences working in El Salvador, and about the impressive work being done in this country of extreme poverty and environmental vulnerability. The speakers will talk about the important role of international solidarity and how you can be a part of this relationship of cultural exchange, solidarity, and development.
Dinner will be provided from a local El Salvadorian restaurant at the event for $5 per person. Organic, fair trade coffee from El Salvador will be also available for $12 a bag.
