I want to let the Vox community know about a way Josh and I have been serving in the past year that I think might align with the interests and passions of other Vox members. There is a mentorship program here in Austin called Open Table (not to be confused with Vox’s own New Table :)) that serves youth aged-out of foster care. Josh and I have really enjoyed the opportunity to meet our Open Table sister and her community. It has been so eye opening and inspiring, and I feel like it could be a really good fit for some Vox community members who feel like they have the capacity to commit to mentoring someone for that length of time. It is also a great opportunity for couples to be able to serve together.
- Grace Covenant Church off 183 and Mopac has a ministry called Fostering Futures that helps families with foster care, adoption, and facilitates mentorship opportunities for aged-out youth in the community.
- Last year, they implemented the “open table” model to come alongside the aged-out youth population in Austin and place them into relationships with 6-8 adults that serve as a sort of surrogate family for one year.
- The commitment is one year, meeting for an hour each week. Of course, there will be times that you will see them outside of regular meeting times.
- There’s an information meeting on 2/22 at Grace Covenant Church from 12:30-2:30pm with lunch and childcare included.
The website with details about the informational meeting is HERE. Information about the Open Table model is HERE.
