Lynn Osgood walks us through Luke’s story of the road to Emmaus where the risen Christ is present long before the disciples recognize him. This sermon opens a new series, God in Ordinary Places, by asking what might change if we looked at the world around us in the same way: not as places where we bring God, but as places where God is already at work.
Reflections Questions:
1. Where in your ordinary routines are you most likely to overlook the presence of God?
2. We often imagine spiritual life as directing our attention away from everyday things toward something “higher.” What might change if we instead encountered God through the world around us?
3. In what places do you feel closer to God? What makes those places the particular places they are?
Opening Prayer
Each person gathered here today has a story
that is quite different from your own. Collectively,
we bring a wild arrangement of life experiences
that give strength to our community.
As different as we are, we are united in wanting
to love and serve those around us. Some of us
have energy for it now, and others do not.
Lord God, let us recognize when it’s our time
to seek, and when we should wait to be found.
We trust that no matter where we are, you will
find us, because you never left us.
We live into your story with us as we gather
in the name of the Father,
of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit
Amen

Benediction
May grace and peace be ours in abundance,
in the knowledge of God and of Jesus, our Lord.
May we be thankful for simple things, for friendship,
for health, for daily bread, for good news.
May we rise above the corruption of power
and become participants in the divine nature.
May we go from this place to pursue goodness,
wisdom, holiness and love.
God the Creator, call us to the work of the kingdom.
God the Redeemer, keep us from stumbling.
God the Sustainer, transform and inspire us.
Let us leave, thankful and serving
with the love of the Creator,
Of Christ the Redeemer,
and the Spirit who sustains us
Amen
