Fake Empire

October 12 to November 23, 2008

The National sing a song called “Fake Empire”. One of the ideas is that we’re comfortable with our apple pies and diamond slippers so we don’t ask hard questions of the empire. We can take this both literally of the American Empire (paralleled to the Egyptian Empire that Moses was dealing with and was originally a part of) and spiritually as this story ultimately foreshadows Christ freeing us from oppression through the cross. Join us as we have a conversation about the Fake Empire.

Fake Empire
The National

Stay out super late tonight
picking apples, making pies
put a little something in our lemonade and take it with us
we’re half-awake in a fake empire
we’re half-awake in a fake empire

Tiptoe through our shiny city
with our diamond slippers on
do our gay ballet on ice
bluebirds on our shoulders
we’re half-awake in a fake empire
we’re half-awake in a fake empire

Turn the light out say goodnight
no thinking for a little while
lets not try to figure out everything at once
It’s hard to keep track of you falling through the sky
we’re half-awake in a fake empire
we’re half-awake in a fake empire
